Doctor Strange Breaks Marvel Box Office Record with $600M Worldwide

Marvel may be taking risks more often in the future, because they are really starting to pay off. Doctor Strange has now grossed more than $600 million worldwide and similar to movies like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy before it, was considered to be a bit of a risk and was definitely outside the norm for comic book movies. It turns out, audiences like a little bit (or in this case a lot bit) of Strange.

According to Box Office Mojo, Marvel Studios’ latest Doctor Strange is just shy of $616 million worldwide, after adding to its total over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Domestically, the movie has already grossed more than $200 million, after adding another $13 million over the weekend. That puts it over other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies like The Incredible Hulk ($135 million}, Captain America: The First Avenger ($177 million), Ant-Man ($180 million) and Thor ($181 million). Worldwide, it has also already passed all of those movies total box office hauls, in addition to Iron Man, which kicked off the MCU and made $585 million worldwide.

After the Thanksgiving weekend, Doctor Strange now has a pretty major claim to fame in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is now the highest grossing debut solo movie in the MCU. The previous record holder was Iron Man. The highest debut for a standalone franchise in the MCU was Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, which managed to gross a very impressive $773 million worldwide. That record is still very much in sight for Doctor Strange, especially when considering that the movie still has to open in Japan, which won’t happen until January 27. As Marvel Studios, and Disney as a whole has proved, these movies tend to perform very well overseas.

Doctor Strange had helped propel Disney to unprecedented levels of success this year at the box office. The studio recently crossed $6 billion at the global box office for the year, aided by director Scott Derrickson and star Benedict Cumberbatch, who have turned out to be a pretty magical combination. Having the Marvel name attached certainly didn’t hurt anything, but considering the level of success this movie is enjoying, which is even more impressive when considering the character was relatively unknown by anyone outside of the hardcore comic book community. With the help of Doctor Strange, in addition to Moana and the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney could be looking at the all-time record for a single year. That currently belongs to Universal, who brought in an unbelievable take just shy of $7 billion.

Next up for Marvel Studios will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017, followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7, 2017, and Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. Coincidentally, Thor: Ragnarok will feature the character of Doctor Strange in what seems like it will be a little more than your standard Marvel cameo. Maybe he can give a little bit of his box office magic to the Thor franchise as well. Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen and is in theaters now.
